ESTC Distribution Team heads to Deepest, Darkest Peru!

It's just a few months to go until our distribution team, including ESTC Grants Coordinator, Eliza Raymond, heads to deepest, darkest Peru! OK, maybe not deepest, darkest Peru - that's where Paddington Bear is from! (For those wondering, Paddington's Peruvian name is Pastuso). The team are actually heading to Cusco and the surrounding areas to distribute funds from last year's Eat So They Can campaign.

In between workshops and visits to the sights of Cusco, the distribution team will be visiting orphanages and schools in the Sacred Valley. At these projects, Eat So They Can helps support a program to reduce malnutrition amongst the students.

Also on the itinerary is a visit to a community center near Cusco. Here, funds raised from the Women's Empowerment cause are used to provide training workshops for women in textiles and jewellery-making. This program is just one example of the types of projects the distribution team will be implementing on their August trip. The goal of this program is to help improve the social status of women, breaking the cycle of poverty and exclusion of women.
The program is open to women of the Hermanos Ayar community who are unable to get employment and who are mothers of children under 12 who attend the childcare programs at Huchuy Yachaq. There are three main aspects to the workshops the community center runs. These are focused around:

1. Practical workshops
- Silver jewellery making
- Creativity and design
- Social skills for life e.g. self-esteem, leadership, decision-making, prevention of violence.

2. Commercial workshops
- How to sell your products
- Fair trade
- How to access information about prices and fashions

3. Financial workshops
- How to work in a team or ‘association’
- How to save money

The program hopes to empower women by creating opportunities for income-generation, self-sufficiency and prevention of violence. Such a great project, and we're all looking forward to hearing the feedback after the trip!

If you would like to donate to the Huchuy Yachaq community center near Cusco, you can do so here. If you're interested in going on one of distribution trips, have a look at the ESTC Distribution Trip website.
